The summer has heralded its arrival in perfect timing with the start of the Wellington Premier League which gets underway today, 4 June, and runs until Sunday. The hardworking team at Wellington have pulled out all the stops for a great four days and riders from all over the country have made the journey to Hampshire. There’s a full selection of young horse classes on for discovering new talent as well as standard classes from medium to grand prix to include a £1000 first prize PSG freestyle.
Wellington have recently unveiled a spectacular new clubhouse which is split over three floors and includes double aspect viewing galleries to both arenas, integrated sound system and electronic scoreboard and the Premier League is one of the first opportunities for spectators to see it first hand. There’s also a delicious café run by Wellington Farm Show in case you need some sustenance and if you need retail therapy of the equestrian kind, they have a tack shop on site too.
Laura Tomlinson is amongst the entries with her two prominsing rides, Unique VII and Duvals Capri Sonne Jr while stable jockey Lara Griffiths brings the home-bred Kristjan. Michael Eilberg is quickly becoming a force with the exciting stallion Der Designer (pictured) so watch out for them while the in-form Alice Oppenheimer has three rides across a range of classes. Matt Hicks, Charlie Hutton, Matt Frost, Rebecca Hughes and Bobby Hayler are also ones to watch.
Today the Young Horses got the action underway with qualifiers for the Hickstead Young Dressage Horse championships for five and six year olds. A mammoth Fairfax Saddles with 34 starters runs in the International arena before an FEI Inter I packed full of top names.
On Friday, there are two young horse competitions; the Shearwater potential international dressage horse for four and five year olds and further Hickstead classes, international this time. There’s a further huge PSG and an Inter II.
Saturday features a Gala Afternoon with a £1000 first prize PSG freestyle, carrying on the venue’s long support of music classes. This is preceded by and Inter I and the Grand Prix which promises to be a close fought affair.
On Sunday, the younger riders have team tests at Pony, Junior and Young Rider levels and with European team announcements shortly, star performances could just earn a Team GBR call up. There’s also a Grand Prix Special and final PSF and Inter I class.
Entry for spectators is free with the exception of the Gala Afternoon on Saturday (6 June) which is ticketed. It’s £10 each or £20 for a family ticket (four persons). Tickets can be purchased at reception on arrival. Call 01189 326308 for further information.
